Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android, is leaving Google.

Rubin co-founded Android in 2003, with the company and operating system then being bought by Google in 2005.

The platform has grown massively since then, becoming the most popular mobile platform in the world, with over a billion devices activated.

Google CEO Larry Page released a press statement, confirming Rubin's departure.

'I want to wish Andy all the best with what's next. With Android he created something truly remarkable-with a billion plus happy users. Thank you,' TechCrunch quoted Page as saying.

So what's next for Rubin?

According to the Wall Street Journal, the mobile pioneer is putting together an incubator for 'technology hardware' products.
