Former POW calls Bergdahl a Traitor

CHARLOTTE -- A video released Wednesday by the Taliban reportedly shows the transfer of POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to U.S. forces after five years as a prisoner.

But the circumstances surrounding his release this weekend are drawing more scrutiny each day.

'The facts that are coming in show it was a lousy job, a lousy deal for America,' said Col. James Quincy Collins, Jr., a former Prisoner of War.

Collins was a POW in Vietnam and shared a cell with John McCain.

'This guy is a deserter, or at a minimum left his post, so I'm not sure he qualifies as a POW,' Collins said.

But other veterans say that's irrelevant.

'That has no bearing on whether he was a POW or not,' said Sonny Deal, a member of the Rolling Thunder, which raises awareness about prisoners of war and those missing in action. He says it's the government's responsibility to make sure no member of our military gets left behind -- no matter what the circumstances.

'He was still a soldier held by an enemy force,' Deal said.

Deal says he questions the government's decision to trade Bergdahl for five Taliban prisoners at Guantanamo. Some politicians say the Obama administration broke the law by not giving Congress 30 days' notice of the transfer from Guantanamo.Bergdahl's hometown in Idaho planned a celebration of his release later this month, but officials there canceled it Wednesday, citing security concerns after getting a number of angry calls and emails.
