A man and a woman have been rescued from a South Side stretch of Lake Michigan nearly 12 hours after a boat capsized Saturday afternoon, and Chicago authorities are still searching for several who still may be in the water.

The man was rescued from the lake after he was spotted by a fishing boat near the 31st Street Harbor about 6:15 a.m., Chicago Police said.

Joel Reiser, a fishing captain with Brush and Roll Charters, said he was about six miles off shore when he spotted what appeared to be a kayak about 6:15 a.m.

Reiser told reporters he pulled his boat up and discovered a man in a life jacket calling for help. He threw the man a life preserver, pulled him onto the boat and immediately called the U.S. Coast Guard, Reiser said.

The man told authorities he was on a boat that capsized about 6 miles offshore about 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The man, who was wearing a flotation device, was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition with hypothermia, according to the fire department. He told rescuers that the other victims were also wearing flotation devices.

A second victim, a woman, was pulled from the lake and also brought to Mercy Hospital, according to a fire official. Authorities were performing CPR on her as she was brought into the emergency room.

thorities were still searching the lake for four other people thought to have been on the boat, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit, the Chicago Fire Department and the Coast Guard are all continuing to search for other victims, police said.
