AUGUSTA, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dozens of volunteers prepare for Memorial Day at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, by placing thousands of flags on veteran's graves.Some men and women spent hours honoring our fallen heroes.'To think of the blood that these folks shed for our country, it's just amazing,' Joseph Peterson says.More than 20,000 graves, each with its own red, white and blue, were perfectly positioned Saturday. Dozens of volunteers covered 770 acres of the cemetery with a symbol of our freedom.'This is an awesome place, it will take your breath away,' Sue Barrus says.Whether it was for the Korean War, or World War II, these veterans have already come and gone, but their sacrifices will live on.'They gave up their lives for our freedom,' says Isabella Hakman.Mercedes Matthews says, 'They fought for our country, they made it so that I could be free, and I want to one day make sure other kids like me, can be free too.''Just take and reflect on what you see here today, take this all in, because America is what it is today because of the folks that are here today,' says Peterson.Because freedom is not free.Sunday is the Memorial Day service at the cemetery. It starts at 2 p.m. The service will include a Patriot Guard ride, a presentation of colors and the laying of the wreaths, followed by taps and a rifle salute.
