A top state social media official today formally apologized on Twitter for a tweet posted Wednesday that contained the phrase 'sexual assault is always avoidable'' as the state promoted Sexual Awareness Assault Month.

In a four-part Tweet posted today to @massgov, Geoff Kula, director of the mass.gov website, expressed regret over the use of the phrase, which was harshly denounced by multiple followers of the state's primary website and Twitter account with 36,100 followers.

'I deeply regret the message sent last night regarding sexual assault and apologize to all sexual assault victims,'' Kula wrote in a text where he took responsibility for both the offending tweet and the apology. 'We in no way meant to suggest that victims of sexual assault are to blame for the crimes committed against them.''

The tweet that infuriated some people was posted around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday and removed around 9 a.m. today and was replaced by the apology.

The apology ended by giving readers a chance to 'learn more about what you can do to combat violence or if you need assistance'' by directing them to Massachusetts Health and Human Services blog.
