Burns: Bounkham Phonesavanh's injuries

A toddler is in a medically induced coma with severe burns after a SWAT team threw a stun grenade into his cot during a drugs raid.

Nineteen-month-old Bounkham Phonesavanh Jr has been left with serious injuries to his face and chest after detectives burst into the house where he was staying on Wednesday night.

Mum Alecia told WSBTV that she was visiting her sister-in-law in Atlanta, Georgia, when the SWAT team carried out the raid, throwing the stun grenade which landed in her son's crib.

She said: 'It landed in his playpen and exploded on his pillow right in his face.'

The toddler is now in an induced coma in a specialist burns unit.

His mum added: 'We go up to see him and his whole face is ripped open. He has a big cut on his chest. He's only 19 months old. He didn't do anything.'

Police chief Rick Darby said the raid took place at around 3am on Wednesday after a drugs unit issued a warrant and organised a SWAT operation to arrest a man known to have drugs and weapons.

Darby said there were no clothes or toys to indicate children were at the property, adding that his entire unit had been left devastated by the incident.

He said: 'You're trying to minimize anything that could go wrong and in this case the greatest thing went wrong.'

Wanis Thometheva, 30, was arrested during the raid.

Bou Jr's family do not have medical insurance, and a fund has been set up by family and friends do help pay for his treatment and other expenses.
