LeVar Burton and the Reading Rainbow team have reached their $1 million goal on Kickstarter in less than a day -- and the fundraising campaign is still going!
Burton and his team launched a Kickstarter campaign Wednesday in the hopes of raising $1 million to accomplish three goals: Get Reading Rainbow on the Internet, develop a version that teachers can use in the classroom and be able to give RR to low-income schools for free.
The PBS show, whose 26-year run was helmed by host LeVar Burton from 1983 and 2009, has already been reimagined in the form of a tablet app two years ago. But Burton and his company RRKidz are looking to go even further with the Web-based version, which would be able to reach more children. While 97% of children have access to the Internet, only 33% have access to a tablet, Burton tells the Verge.
Burton details his mission on the Kickstarter page:
I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate. We have a responsibility to prepare our children... and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility. And here's the problem: Right now, 1 out of every 4 children in America will grow up illiterate.
Thanks to donors, now more kids will be able to 'take a look, it's in a book - a reading rainbow!'
