Police Report: Brickell Slapped Simon, He Shoved Her During Domestic Dispute

NORWALK - The domestic dispute that brought New Canaan police to the home of singer-songwriters Paul Simon and Edie Brickell Saturday night began when Brickell confronted Simon about 'something he had done which broke her heart,' according to a police report.

Officer Michael McFadden, responding to a 911 hang-up call, wrote in his report that he could hear two people 'loudly screaming at each other' but could not get to them because a seven-foot fence topped with barbed wire surrounds the property.

Eventually, McFadden wrote, Simon came from the house and let police onto the property. Simon had blood on his left ear lobe that he told police Brickell has slapped him, and Brickell admitted slapping Simon and added that 'he forcibly grabbed her,' according to the report.

'Brickell had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath, and she would at times become extremely agitated,' McFadden wrote in his report. 'She alluded to there being other physical confrontations in the relationship, but she refused to elaborate or answer any questions.'

The couple was arraigned Monday in Superior Court in Norwalk after being charged Saturday night. Each faces a single count of disorderly conduct. A police report on the incident became available Wednesday. Their lawyer, Allan Cramer, could not be reached for comment.

Simon told police that, after the slap, he shoved his wife and then called 911, saying that was the extent of the physical confrontation between him and Brickell, his wife of 22 years.

Police said the incident occurred in a cottage on the couple's property that they use as a recording studio. There was no evidence of a struggle inside the cottage, police said.

'When I asked Brickell what happened she stated that she had come to the cottage to confront Simon on something he had done which broke her heart,' Sgt. Joseph Farenga wrote in his report. 'She stated that Simon cannot handle being criticized in any manner and became confrontational with her. I asked Brickell if she hit Simon and she stated, 'I didn't hit him,' then went on to say, 'I slapped him in the face.''

Brickell told the officer that she slapped Simon because he was 'grabbing her wrists.' Farenga wrote that Brickell then briefly showed him 'a small bruise on her right wrist but when I later tried to photograph the bruise she refused and stated I could not see it anymore and pulled her sleeve down.'

Simon agreed to stay at the couple's apartment in New York until the arraignment. Police also photographed the slight injury to Simon's left ear lobe.

When the couple appeared in court on Monday, they walked in holding hands and assured a judge that the incident was isolated and that a protective order was not necessary.

'Neither of us has any fear,' Simon told Norwalk Superior Court Judge William Wenzel.

'He's no threat to me at all,' Brickell told the judge.
