Former New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean is stepping in to deliver the Rutgers University commencement address May 18, following Saturday's decision by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to pull out of the original invitation after protests from students and faculty.
Kean's appearance was announced by university President Robert Barchi on Monday afternoon.
'Gov. Kean's career as a public servant, educator and statesman speaks to the civility, integrity, and vision that we hope will guide our graduates as they pursue their careers or further their studies,' Barchi said in a release.
Students and faculty had circulated petitions and staged a sit-in opposing Rice, whom they criticized for her involvement in the Iraq war and association with 'enhanced interrogation' methods in the war on terror.
Kean will not accept a speaking fee for his address, according to the release.
