'Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill' says Dr Keiji Fukuda, WHO's Assistant Director-General of Food Security.
The World Health Organisation has released its first report on antimicrobial resistance, which includes antibiotic resistance.
They have gathered data from 114 countries, including Australia, and it provides the most comprehensive picture of antibiotic resistance to date.
Dr Norman Swan explained the report in layman's terms. He told Geoff Hutchison that one of the reasons for the problem is 'too many unnecessary antibiotics are being used and when antibiotics are being used the wrong antibiotics are being used'
