All Ohio spellers succeed in first live round of national bee

Ashwin Veeramani, 14, of North Royalton, competes at the national spelling bee.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- All 19 participants from Ohio correctly spelled their first words in the opening live round of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee this morning, guaranteeing them a second chance this afternoon.

Some had harder words than others, strictly by luck of the draw. For example, Melina Gabele, 12, of Willoughby, easily spelled 'myriad.' (Definition: a very great number.)

But Joseph Cusi Delamerced , 14, of Cincinnati, struggled with 'witloof,' stopping in mid-spelling and asking permission to start again. The word's origin is Dutch, and it means chicory, but also defines a crown of foliage in a green salad. Starting over -- but stopping mid-definition again and looking worried -- Joseph nevertheless got it right.

Ashwin Veeramani, 14, of North Royalton, was asked to spell 'ingenue.' He asked for the definition (a stage part representing a character that is youthful and innocent) and the language of origin (French).

Then he nailed it.

This is Ashwin's second year in the national bee. His sister, Anamika, won it in 2010.

Few spellers from any states have been eliminated so far in this round. The spellers come to the front of stage in the alphabetical order of their states, so the Ohioans should be back up in mid-afternoon. The spelling bee is being held in a ballroom of the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in suburban Washington, D.C.
