LIVERMORE -- A mother stabbed her 1-year-old daughter to death inside Del Valle Regional Park on Saturday afternoon after first trying to kill herself, authorities said.
The 23-year-old woman, whose name was not released, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail. It was not immediately known if the woman was injured.
Alameda County Sheriff's Office deputies and East Bay Regional Park District police were on scene at Arroyo Road inside the park, about 10 miles south of Livermore.
The crime scene was not far from the Arroyo Dam and near the Wente Golf Course.
The woman and the child went to the park alone, according to early reports.
It was not immediately known when the stabbing occurred, what kind of weapon was used or what may have spurred the woman's actions.
The main gate of the 4,400-acre park remained open. But Arroyo Road remained eerily quiet as all traffic into that park entrance was told to turn around. The road leads to Camp Arroyo, a popular summer camp spot for area children.
In July 2009, the bodies of a Walnut Creek teenager and his mother were found at Mount Diablo State Park in an apparent murder-suicide.
In that case, Adam Williams, 16, a student at Las Lomas High School, was shot and killed by his mother, Judith Williams, at the Lookout Point picnic area, according to accounts by Sheriff's Office investigators, the coroner's office and family.
The bodies of mother and son were found by park staff closing up that night. Sheriff's Office detectives found a suicide note at Judith Williams' Walnut Creek home.
