DETROIT, MI -- A motorist stopped to check on an 11-year-old boy after he struck him with his vehicle at a gas station in Detroit and was severely beaten by a crowd of bystanders late Wednesday afternoon.
'The child ran into the road in front of the vehicle and was struck,' a representative if the Detroit Police Department Public Information Office said. 'The driver stopped, got out to aid the child and he was severely beaten by 10-12 black males.'
Detroit police say both the motorist and child were in critical condition Wednesday evening.
Police did not have condition updates Thursday morning.
There were no suspects and it was undetermined if the gas station had surveillance cameras, a police spokesman said.
'My understanding is that it was a low-speed accident. It was exactly that - just an accident,' Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody told the Detroit Free Press. 'The man did try to stop and render aid. He did everything he could exactly right.'
The Free Press says, according to Woody, the 54-year-old motorist may die.
Detroit police have reported numerous hit-and-run crashes that resulted in the deaths of pedestrians over the last year.
