Louisville, City in Kentucky, is 'Allergy Capital' of US

Around 45 million Americans suffer from allergies ranging from extreme sensitivity to nasal allergies due to pollen and mold. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has come up with its annual list of top 100 US 'Allergy Capitals'.

The AAFA has ranked cities after analyzing different factors like number of allergy medications used per patient and the most challenging places to live with spring allergies.

Louisville, Ky., tops this year's list of Allergy Capitals of the United States. It was at number fifth position in the last year's list. New York is at number 13 and Los Angeles is at 38th position. Both the cities have jumped way up in the list.

Birmingham, Ala., is at number 9, Richmond, Va., is ranked at 8 and Dallas at 7th position. The AAFA said this year could be rougher. Experts seem to be having answer for that as snowfall followed by warmer temperature may bring a rise in moisture and mold counts in affected areas of the nation.

Colorado Springs, Colorado is at bottom of the list with a score of 45.09 out of 100. But then also Mike Tringale, Senior Vice President of External Affairs for AAFA said it is also considered bad for allergies. 'There are 320 metropolitan areas in the country and these are the 100 that have the right mix of factors to be considered 'allergy capitals' - i.e., the most challenging for certain allergy sufferers', affirmed Tringale.

Precautions to avoid the allergies include staying indoors during dry windy days, avoiding work like lawn mowing, weed pulling and gardening among other things. The May Clinic has suggested keeping windows and doors closed during day pollen counts and also avoiding outdoor activity in early morning as at that time the counts are highest.
