Authorities are warning of a 'potentially catastrophic' storm system barreling through parts of Mississippi less than 24 hours after leaving 17 people dead in its path.
At 4:01 p.m. EST a massive tornado was reported about 10 miles northeast of Tombigbee State Park in Tupelo while moving northeast at 50 MPH, the National Weather Service reported.
Almost immediately after photos of extreme damage including downed power lines and at least one splintered building were posted on Twitter.

'MAJOR damage in North Tupelo. This is serious guys!' @stevenheicher tweeted with his photo.
In a related alert at 15:01 CDT the NWS advised residents to 'take cover now!'
'This tornado has caused damage in Lee County,' they stated.
Further evidence of the storm's terror was seen during a local TV station's weather report as a WTVA meteorologist is seen evacuating the station after informing viewers of a 'tornado emergency.'
In a press conference Sunday Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials described the storm system as 'potentially catastrophic' while imploring residents to seek shelter.
The system is expected to tear through the state into Tuesday and possibly into the morning hours of Wednesday.
Satellite imagining taken from NASA shows the violent weather system storming over seven central and southern states since Sunday.
The massive storm is responsible for spawning several tornadoes from Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
