President Obama's approval ratings hit a new low Tuesday, a new poll shows, as dissatisfaction with the White House's handling of the economy grows.

Obama's job approval dropped to 41% in March from 43% in January, a Wall Street Journal / NBC poll found.

Another 54% of respondents said they disapprove of the job Obama is doing as President.

Many of those polled pointed to an inconsistent economic recovery as a primary reason for their discontentment.

Nearly two-thirds of those polled said the country was on the wrong track, with only 25% saying they thought the economy would improve this year.

The numbers are the clearest indication yet that Democrats face an uphill battle hanging onto their Senate majority in November's midterm elections.

But as discouraging as the poll, conducted among 1,000 adults March 5-9, was for Democrats, it found dismal approval ratings for Republicans as well.

Nearly half of respondents (45%) said they viewed the GOP negatively, while only 27% said they had positive views of the party.
