PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island State Police entered House Speaker Gordon Fox's office at the State House on Friday morning, but nothing was known about what they were looking for or what they are investigating.

House spokesman Larry Berman told WPRI.com he was asked to leave the speaker's office and had no idea what was going on. Speaker Fox is not inside, Berman said.

All comment on the matter is being referred to Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha's office. Access to the speaker's office was being blocked by state police.

Jim Martin, a spokesman for Neronha, said he had no comment.

Fox, a 52-year-old Providence Democrat, is often called the most powerful man in Rhode Island politics thanks to the speaker's gavel.
