Formerly deaf woman hears music for the first time in 40 years – watch

A playlist for Milne was played earlier this week on BBC6 Music

A deaf woman has been able to listen to music for the first time in 40 years - watch the moment below.

Jo Milne has been deaf since birth due to Usher syndrome, a disorder that can cause visual impairment, as well as hearing loss. Milne was fitted with a cochlear implant back in February, but has had to wait over a month for the device to be switched on.

In an interview with the Journal, Milne said: 'The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life and I'm still in shock now. The first day everybody sounded robotic and I have to learn to recognise what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain.'

A friend of Milne's created an 'Introduction To Music' playlist for her, which includes artists such as Bruce Springsteen[a/] (pictured), [a]Nirvana and Prince.

BBC6 Music played the playlist in full for Milne earlier this week.
