AUSTIN, Texas -- A car drove into a packed crowd of pedestrians outside a downtown Austin nightclub during the South By Southwest music festival early Thursday morning, according to police.
Austin police confirmed the crash killed two and critically injured five, sending a total of 23 bystanders for treatment.
The crash occurred outside the Mohawk nightclub, near Red River St. and 10 th St., a popular destination for concerts during the annual festival.
The hit-and-run occurred around 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Eyewitnesses and other news outlets on the scene described a grey sedan with a cracked windshield plowing into the crowd, leaving a trail of injured clubgoers in the middle of the busy intersection. The crash was visible to blocks of concertgoers, and images of the bloody scene quickly spread through social media.
Austin police sources have not yet identified any of the victims.
Police and emergency medical technicians immediately responded and cordoned off the area. Public information officers held a briefing on the crash at 2 a.m. local time. All events at the venue have reportedly been canceled for the night.
