WASHINGTON (AP) - Police say a man is in custody following a bus crash on Interstate 95 that left one person dead.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a statement that 31-year-old Raphael Manuel Barrientos of Dumfries, Va., was taken into custody Sunday and has been charged with one felony count of hit-and-run. A woman who answered the phone at his home declined to comment.

State Police said the crash happened early Sunday in northern Virginia. Witnesses reported seeing a white, speeding four-door passenger vehicle swerve into the bus's travel lane. The bus then swerved right to avoid the car, ran off the road, struck the guardrail and overturned.

Troopers identified the man who died as 24-year-old David Alberto Sanchez of Woodbridge, Va. Police say 16 others were sent to hospitals.
