Democratic candidate for Texas governor Wendy Davis is fighting back after questions about details of her personal life.
Davis recently came under fire after admitting in an interview with the Dallas Morning News that her life story was lacking information. She said that certain specifics were not fleshed out and that her situation was more complicated than what was being publicly portrayed, but she defended her story as accurate.
'I've always been open about my life not because my story is unique, but because it isn't,' Davis said.
She said her story resonates with many voters and attempts to discredit it would be ineffective.
'We're not surprised by Greg Abbott's campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead,' Davis said. 'But they won't work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you're young, alone and a mother.'
The candidate became the center of national attention last year following her filibuster against proposed laws restricting abortion access. Voters came to know her as the struggling single mother, defying odds to become a successful lawyer, an image that propelled her to fame and encouraged her to announce a bid for governor.
'The truth is that at age 19, I was a teenage mother living alone with my daughter in a trailer and struggling to keep us afloat on my way to a divorce,' she said. 'And I knew then that I was going to have to work my way up and out of that life if I was going to give my daughter a better life and a better future and that's what I've done.'
She said she is proud of where she came from and proud of her achievements.
