Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has abandoned her bid for a US Senate seat.
Ms Cheney cited 'serious health issues' that 'have recently arisen in our family' as the reason for her decision.
She had hoped to unseat Wyoming Republican incumbent Senator Mike Enzi.
Liz Cheney hoped to follow her father into politics
But her candidacy raised hackles in the Republican Party and caused a public rift with her sister, Mary, a lesbian, over Liz Cheney's opposition to gay marriage.
Ms Cheney did not mention those controversies in her withdrawal statement.
Mary Cheney opposed her sister's stance on gay marriage
'Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign.
'My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and they will always be my overriding priority.'
Ms Cheney's effort to replace Sen Enzi angered and upset many Republicans and drew virtually no support from Senate Republicans.
When she announced her campaign, Ms Cheney said it was time for Republicans in Congress to stop 'cutting deals' with Democrats and said it was time 'for a new generation of leaders'.
In November, Ms Cheney said she opposed gay marriage, sparking a public feud with her sister.
As the feud heated up, Dick Cheney stepped in, saying Liz Cheney 'has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage' but has 'always treated her sister and her sister's family with love and respect'.
