J.R. Smith was fined $50,000 earlier this week for repeated incidents of untying opponents' shoelaces. On Thursday night, when the New York Knicks took on the Miami Heat on TNT, coach Mike Woodson decided to send Smith a message about his behavior, benching him for the entire game.
After the game, Woodson refused to address reporters' questions about Smith's benching.
Woodson: 'Again, I'm not talking abt JR. If you wanna talk about the game, we'll talk about the game.'- Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) January 10, 2014
The Knicks won against the two-time defending champions with Smith out, so maybe this will be a permanent change. On the other hand, unless Smith is suspended, he's still getting paid. Maybe benching him isn't a great scare tactic.
