BEIJING, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- A Chinese frigate began transporting Syria's chemical weapons out of the country on Tuesday as part of an international coordination operation, Xinhua news agency reported.
The frigate Yancheng entered Syria's territorial waters on Tuesday and started the removal mission in close coordination with naval vessels from Russia, Denmark and Norway, the ministry's Arms Control Department said in a press release.
China took part in the operation in response to appeals from the UN Security Council and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
'It is an important measure taken by China to remove and eliminate Syria's chemical weapons and promote political resolution of the Syrian issue,' the release said.
A Danish vessel carrying chemicals from two sites in Syria left western Syrian port Latakia on Tuesday.
Chemical weapons will be removed from Syria before being delivered to an American vessel for destruction.
The deadline for destroying Syria's entire chemical weapons is June 30, 2014.
