ROBBINSVILLE - Robbinsville Mayor David Fried declared in an open letter to the town yesterday that the township will proudly host a Christmas tree lighting ceremony this year and denounced any politically correct terms for the event.
The town announced that it would host a 'Tree Lighting Ceremony' and Menorah lighting tonight, but Fried said he was upset the township could identify the Menorah, but not a Christmas tree.
The township had historically held a Christmas tree and Menorah lighting each year. Concerns of political correctness were apparently raised, and it became a 'Holiday Tree Celebration,' Fried said. Recently, the event was changed to simply a 'Tree Lighting Ceremony.'

'This is just not right,' Fried said. 'We can say we have a Menorah, a Jewish religious symbol, but for some reason we can't call our tree what it is - a Christmas tree, which is not even a religious symbol.'
The mayor said that township officials recently took part in a Hindu celebration at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temple in town. Public schools were closed on Sept. 5 in celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Fried added that he intends to treat all religions fairly in Robbinsville.
The Christmas tree and Menorah lighting celebration was held Tuesday at The Greenes at Foxmoor on Washington Boulevard.
