A 16-year-old Indiana girl once hailed a hero for helping save two children from drowning in an icy reservoir died after she was mysteriously shot late Sunday, authorities said.

Aubrey Peters was bleeding from a bullet wound to her chest when cops arrived to the River Run Place home in Noblesville about 11:20 p.m., the Indianapolis Star reported.

McDaniel was waiting Monday to be arraigned.

Peters was one of six people to be honored with the Red Cross Hall of Fame Award from the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis in 2011.

The year before, the teen and her grandparents helped rescue two young sisters who fell into the frigid water of a reservoir behind their home.
